Finca Bella Vista washed Caturra (SCA score 85) – Colombia

Colombian coffee is regarded as some of the finest in the world, and the country is the world’s third largest producer.  Having been introduced by Jesuit priests in the 17th Century, the early coffee traders relied upon slavery until its abolition in 1851, and by 1860 coffee had become Colombia’s largest export.

Today, the country hosts around 500,000 small coffee farms, and the unique combination of favourable altitude, nutrient-rich volcanic soil and a shady canopy of banana and rubber plants gives coffee an idyllic space in which to flourish.

Other mainstays of the Colombian economy are petroleum exports and shipbuilding.

Finca (‘Farm’) Bella Vista (‘Great View’) is a family-owned plantation in the Huila (pronounced ‘wila’) Department of Colombia.  This region of Southern Colombia is spanned by the Andes and home to the Nevada del Huila volcano.    Situated at an altitude of 1,730m and boasting around 65,000 coffee plants, the farm has one permanent member of staff and 15-20 seasonal workers hired in for the harvests.

This coffee is a fantastic example of a Colombian single origin 100% Arabica.  Having been washed and dried in the sun for between 13 and 18 days, (depending on climate), the coffee has the characteristic flavours of milk chocolate, roasted almonds and stone fruits, making it ideal for espresso-based drinks.

November’s Coffee of the Month has received a speciality coffee score of 85, placing it in the ‘Excellent’ bracket.  Roasted to order on our Aillio R1V2 roaster, we have a very limited supply of this coffee, so order now!
